How to Use the Auto Loan Calculator

Our car payment calculator is designed to help you determine two estimated main factors:

  1. The loan amount you need to finance.
  2. Your monthly payments.

To use the loan calculator, simply:

  1. Enter the retail price of the vehicle. Remember, you might get a better price at the dealership; this step is just to get you started.
  2. Figure the sales tax. Sales tax varies by state, so you might need to contact your local motor vehicle agency to ask. Keep in mind, there could be a difference between the sales tax for a new vehicle and the sales tax for a used vehicle.
  3. Determine the annual interest rate. Like the sales tax, the interest rate can vary greatly, often depending on whether the car is new or used; how long you play to finance the car; and even the date. Currently, Bankrate provides auto loan interest rates based on three-month auto trends.
  4. Decide on your term. This means how long you plan to make car payments. Sometimes, the longer the loan term, the lower the monthly payments. Be sure to talk with your lender about the pros and cons of shorter vs. longer terms.
  5. Enter your down payment. How much money can you pay upfront for the vehicle? Generally, the higher the down payment, the lower the monthly payments.
  6. Provide your trade-in value. Are you trading in a used vehicle? How much is that vehicle worth?

Once you complete each of these steps, our calculator will provide you with an estimated car loan amount you need to finance as well as projected monthly payments.

Other Car Costs to Consider

When it comes to determining how much your new (or new to you!) car will cost, monthly car payments aren't your only financial concern.

For example, when determining your vehicle budget, you'll need to consider:

  • Title and registration fees.
  • Auto insurance costs.
  • Vehicle inspection fees*.
  • Smog and emissions testing fees*.

Each of these factors will help you determine how much owning your new or used vehicle will actually cost in the long run.

* Find out whether your state requires vehicle inspections, smog and emissions testing, or both.

If your drivers or professional license has been suspended, contact the child support agency handling your case. The agency handling the case is the ONLY entity that can release your license. Be prepared to make a payment on the amount overdue on your case.

Enforcement actions to improve the effectiveness of a child support order are authorized by federal law. To stay on top of your child support payments, be sure to create a profile in Customer Connect where you can keep track of all of your support case information and email your caseworker if you are having trouble paying your support. Make sure you contact us right away so we can help you avoid enforcement actions like the ones below.

License Suspension

If you owe child support and you are not paying as required, your driver’s, professional, and/or recreational (fishing, hunting, etc.) licenses can be suspended. If your payment is overdue by more than 30 days, a notification is automatically sent to several California licensing agencies, including the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The first time, the licensing agency will notify you by letter and you will have 150 days to respond or your license will be suspended. If it happens again, you will be notified by mail and have only 30 days to respond before your license gets suspended.

If you receive a notification from the DMV or any of the California licensing agencies, you should immediately contact the child support agency handling your case. They can help you avoid this action or help get your license released. Every case is different, so the requirements for the release will be determined on a case by case basis. It is a very good idea to keep your child support agency informed if you have problems making your payments. There are programs available to assist you and communication is always the best action you can take.
